Latin

At West Rise, we grow language enthusiasts who:

•    recognise the correlation between the English language and Latin

•    understand the origin of English words they learn through stories, drama and song

•    understand the purpose behind learning an ancient language.

Latin lies at the root of 60% of English words. We believe learning Latin supports English vocabulary development. It helps students to understand grammar and learn to play with words.

Latin helps later when learning modern languages at secondary school. Children understand the key concepts and roots of language to build on.

We follow the Minimus scheme of work, implemented by Classics for All at Oxford University.

We teach children Latin in a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum. Children explore the origins of language alongside historical stories.
